Lisa Berman

Lisa "MonaLisa" Berman has been working as a dancer, choreographer and instructor for the past 12 years and has had the opportunity to train and perform across the globe. Berman is the recipient of a 2016 McKnight Dancer Fellowship, administered by the Cowles Center and funded by The McKnight Foundation. Recipient of the Jerome Travel and Study Grant for Choreography, Lisa was fortunate to train, choreograph and perform in association with Hip Hop Huis in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She is the founder and Artistic Director of In New Company (INC), an exploratory dance theater company rooted in hip hop. Striving to create movement without a label, INC utilizes foundational breaking movement with modern and innovative concepts. Currently, she is working as a Hip Hop/Breaking instructor for the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, resident Hip Hop teaching artist for The Cowles Center and residency choreographer for Breck School.

Some of the local and national venues she has performed at include: Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Cowles Center, Intermedia Arts, Southern Theater, First Avenue, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Paradise Theater, Lincoln Center, Performa Biennial via Salon 94 NYC, Art Basel Miami and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. She has also performed internationally in the Netherlands at the Kunsthal Museum, Gallery Tribute to Women in Hip Hop, and The National History Museum of Amsterdam. 

 At The Cowles Center, MonaLisa teaches Fundamentals of Breaking and Hip Hop Choreography. She is open to connecting elements of hip hop and breaking with literacy and other curricular subject areas.
