GENERATING ROOM: OPEN PROPOSAL INITIATIVE

APPLY NOW

APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER  22, 2019

(Proposed projects must take place between January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2020)

The Cowles Center’s Generating Room: Open Proposal Initiative is designed to support artists at any stage in their career who need additional administrative and financial support in generating a new project. This initiative annually supports six Minnesota-based dance artists by removing the obstacle of expensive studio rental fees and marketing costs. Generating Room provides 100 hours of free studio space, as well as free promotional and design support, over the course of six months.

Artists are selected through an application-based process and selected by a panel twice a year. Generating Room invests in and champions artists and organizations so they can develop their crafts; practice and produce new work, and ultimately generate community and discussion that makes a cultural contribution. The artists, in turn, give back, with all projects culminating in a free public event for the community.

Selected artists and organizations will meet with Cowles Center Education and Community Engagement staff over the course of their proposed timeline to strategize how to serve a specific community and provide access to quality arts experiences. Artists or organizations from outside of Minnesota may partner on the event, but the lead applicant must be based in Minnesota. Competitive applications will bring a unique perspective, discussion, and engagement opportunity to the Minnesota arts community.

Generating Room looks to support projects that:

  • Establish a partnership with a distinct community

  • Pursue clear project goals over the span of six months

  • Leverage this opportunity to launch into the next steps

Benefits of Open Proposal Initiatives:

  • 100 hours of free space in The Cowles Center's studios (subject to availability)

  • Discounted Cowles Collaborator $5/hour rental rate for studio use outside of the proposed project

  • Promotion in The Cowles Center season program, website, newsletters, and social media accounts as well as posts in DanceMN through The Cowles Center's Marketing Department

  • Access to all photos & videos taken by The Cowles Center during the project

CURRENT GENERATING ROOM ARTISTS:

ARNESHIA WILLIAMS

As part of her Generating Room: Open Proposal Initiative, Arneshia Williams invites those interested in movement, creative processes, and improvisation to an interactive and informal sharing of her latest research, "Rela/y." This lunch hour rehearsal session of "Rela/y," will highlight the beginning stages of artistic formation focused on relationships between varied movement practices, human beings, and improvisation. We will explore themes of restoration and community tied to the questions: What does restoration look like for you? For me? For us? Come ready to snack, engage in dialogue, and witness.

ZOE KOENIG

Zoë Koenig’s new work, Cloud Cover, bridges dance and scientific inquiry as it seeks to understand different psychological responses to looming, indeterminate environmental catastrophe. Cloud loss remains one of the largest sources of uncertainty in climate change models. How do we move within that uncertainty? How can we also make space for play and pleasure? Observers are invited to witness the creative process and participate in the research through dialogue in two open rehearsals and a roundtable discussion on climate change.
