Minneapolis-based Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) will present an evening of new work and signature repertory from the company’s 36-year history. The evening will include the world premiere of a new work by Pimsler titled Bohemian Grove, signature SPDT repertory, The Men from the Boys, and a witty new solo created by Suzanne Costello titled Engarde. Artistic Co-Directors Stuart Pimsler and Suzanne Costello have also invited members of the Young Dance Company to perform another new work created by Pimsler this past year for youth dancers and their parents titled Heroes Unbound, which recalls the undeniable connection between children and their parents.

Directed by Pimsler, Bohemian Grove takes its title from the campground in Northern California where leaders of wealth and power from around the world have gathered for over 100 years. Through a montage of statuesque movement, animal imagery, and probing monologues, Bohemian Grove provides a searing glimpse into the world of the “superclass.”

Engarde, a solo created by Costello for graduating St. Olaf College senior Grace Wehrspann, will also be performed. This witty solo is a portrait of a day in the life of a museum security guard who marches, hums, and humbly cues the public within her rigid, attentive position.

An authority figure and his subject engage in a series of one-upmanships in The Men from the Boys (1990)—a poignant commentary on male intimacy. “Pimsler fashions a pas de deux for the two men that blends wrestling take-down moves with pseudo-balletic lifts and turns, a brilliant...analogy” (The Pittsburg Press).  The Men from the Boys serves as an early example of the ways in which SPDT defies formal artistic boundaries through the blending of emotionally compelling movement and original text. Pimsler will be joined by Company Member Brian Evans in this duet.

The show will feature SPDT company artists Suzanne Costello, Brian Evans, Heather Klopchin, Kari Mosel, Jesse Neumann-Peterson, Stuart Pimsler, and Timmy Wagner.
