Each year three exceptional Minnesota dance artists receive the coveted honor of a McKnight Dancer Fellowship. To celebrate them, we commission a solo dance for each of them from a choreographer of their selection.

The 2016 and 2017 McKnight Dance Fellows have selected an outstanding group of local, national, and international dance artists to bring their choreographic imaginations to new works expressly tailored for these exceptional performers.

The result is SOLO, an evening of six fascinating world premieres with works that range from innovative Hip Hop to fiery flamenco to intimate choreographic explorations and more.

Please be advised: The first half of the performance contains brief nudity.

The Fellows and their selected choreographers include:
Lisa "MonaLisa" Berman (2016 Dancer Fellow) - Victor Quijada (Montreal)

Chris Hannon (2016 Dancer Fellow) - Gina Patterson (Wyoming)

Herb Johnson III (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Tight Eyez (Las Vegas)

Krista Langberg (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Karen Sherman (Minneapolis)

Sachiko “La Chayí” Nishiuchi (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Pepe Torres, Luis Peña, Angelita Vargas (Spain)

Chitra Vairavan (2016 Dancer Fellow) - Eiko Otake (New York)

About the McKnight Dancer Fellowship Program
The McKnight Dancer Fellowship Program annually awards three fellowships of $25,000 each to mid-career Minnesota dancers whose work demonstrates artistic excellence. The awards are unrestricted and can help an artist set aside periods of time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration; take advantage of an opportunity; or work on a new project. In addition to the unrestricted cash award, fellows receive additional support for career development and a SOLO Commission.

SOLO Commissioning Project
As part of each McKnight Dancer Fellows' award, we commission a new work created expressly for each dance fellow, from a choreographer selected by the fellow. The result is SOLO, an evening of six world premieres performed by six extraordinary Minnesota dancers.

McKnight Artist Fellowships
The McKnight Foundation funds individual artist fellowships in 10 program areas. The Cowles Center is the administrative home for the McKnight Fellowships for Dancers and the McKnight Fellowships for Choreographers. These programs include the SOLO Commissioning Project and the McKnight International Choreographer residencies.
