“A demonstration of the vitality of the Twin Cities dance scene … Momentum? Yes, it’s here.” —Mn Artists

Momentum is among the most popular platforms of emerging choreographic talent in the Twin Cities. Featuring two new works each evening, the series highlights an exciting next generation of dance creators. This year’s Momentum artists present distinct journeys based on common themes of individual and group identities, emphasizing the necessity to be connected through our very person.

State of the Moon Address
Hiponymous (Renée Copeland and Genevieve Muench) is committed to making work that values community, social justice, and queer/feminist representations. State of the Moon Address is a visually and sonically textured dance experience in which performers confront unfamiliar cultural systems that seek to control them. Sound design made in collaboration with local musicians/sound-makers Kalen Keir and Tom Woodling.

Using a unique and personal movement vocabulary, Luke Olson-Elm draws inspiration from dance forms ranging from classical ballet to hip-hop. Broken employs precision and sincerity to explore group dynamics that lead to alienation and doubt. For the first time, Olson-Elm composes an original sound score for his fluid choreography that brings energy and emotion to the stage through his movements and music.

Post-show discussion -Friday, July 10

The series is presented by The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts, in partnership with the Walker Art Center and the Southern Theater.

Momentum is made possible by generous support from the Jerome Foundation.
