The Cowles Center will not be hosting the Groundbreaker Battle in summer of 2016. We are taking a year off to assess the goals of the battle and look into future funding opportunities. We want to THANK everyone that has worked with us over the years to make this a successful event. All of our community partners, judges, MCs, DJs and crews; you have been a pleasure to collaborate with. We hope you have a wonderful summer and we hope to see you at The Cowles Center during our 2016/17 season!
The 7th Annual GroundBreaker Battle drew fans and artists of Hip Hop from all over to celebrate Minnesota's talented break dancing community. Congratulations to Travis & Friends who defeated New Heist and took home this year's title after the top 16 crews battled it out all afternoon.
This celebration of Hip Hop artistry and community takes place right next to The Cowles Center, adjacent to Target Field and Target Center. Along with the battles, fans were also treated to performances by Ill Chemistry, House of Dance Youth, and PUPS Crew. The event, which is entirely free for all participants and open to the public, featured B-boys and B-girls from the Twin Cities and throughout the Midwest.
Groundbreaker Battle is now the longest running breaking (break dancing) battle in Minneapolis/St. Paul and boasts significant cash prizes for the top three crews. In addition to the competition, The Cowles Center hosted educational workshops and panels at the event, focusing on breaking fundamentals, beat boxing, and the history of Hip Hop locally and globally.
