Sage Award honoree, Shapiro & Smith Dance will return to The Cowles Center to present their 26th season. Recognized for “Outstanding Performance” for their 25th Anniversary retrospective, Voices – Shapiro & Smith Dance will present two premieres and engage an impressive roster of guest artists to reinvent literary characters in their upcoming performance, “Jack” and “The Ophelias.”
Twin Cities dance luminaries Judith Howard, Erin Thompson and Nic Lincoln will perform alongside Shapiro & Smith Dance company veterans in new works choreographed by Smith, recipient of City Pages 2011 Artist of the Year distinction.
“The Ophelias,” a raucous re-imagining of Hamlet’s tragic love interest will feature Howard, Thompson and Shapiro & Smith Dance Artistic Associate, Laura Selle Virtucio. The second premiere will feature Nic Lincoln (James Sewell Ballet, 2011 City Pages Best Dancer) and Shapiro & Smith’s Scott Metille bringing to life “Jack.” A new duet created by Smith to investigate the origins of nursery rhymes like Jack and Jill, Jack Be Nimble, Little Jack Horner and more. This piece will also feature dancer / thespian Brian Sostek intertwining traditional and new text into the piece.
The program also features company repertory favorites “A Moment Before” set music by Sergei Rachmaninoff and “Burning Air,” a 2011 work for the whole company inspired by the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. The score is by Scott Killian and text by New York Obie-winning playwright and actor David Greenspan.
