Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES opens its 17th Season in the Twin Cities with a premiere and a sneak peak at Main Street Project. The new avant-garde group work, titled Les Petites Choses, set to a variety of music, most notably the French band, Katerine, comments on consumerism – never quite satiating our want of more.'
The sneak peak of Main Street Project, which will premiere in its entirety in 2014, is a reflection on small town America, asking the question “Does main street still exist?” and looking at how relationships have changed through our technological community. The show also includes huddle, with music by 65daysofstatic and Radiohead. This piece toys with the idea of expectations and the dichotomy of stereotypical, testosterone-driven images. Lastly, the program will include selected works from the company’s innovative repertoire.
ARENA is one of the Twin Cities’ premiere dance companies. Reviewing for mnartists.org, Lightsey Darst called Janczewski’s work “physically brilliant yet emotionally intimate, dramatic, widely varied, witty and heartfelt.” ARENA’s works, while abstract, bring audiences into the worlds and emotions presented on stage. Janczewski consistently seeks to create dances that speak to the human condition in all its glorious, wrenching, and magical ways and to transport audiences through the beauty and breathtaking physicality of his movement.
