Contempo Physical Dance presents Batuque, a new full-length work choreographed by Marciano Silva dos Santos that explores the African origins and rise of samba in Brazil. Diverse in form and style and driven by rhythmic percussive music, Batuque is a contemporary statement inspired by the flavors of samba. The performance will feature live original music by Timothy Berry, Eliezer Freitas Santos, Brian Van Tassel and Samuel De Moraes, and set design by local arts legend, Ta-coumba T. Aiken.
This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
Batuque is underwritten by the American Composers Forum's Live Music for Dance Minnesota program in partnership with the American Music Center, with funds provided by the McKnight Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
